If you're considering moving from LA to Nashville, it's exciting and kind of overwhelming at the same time. Nashville has a different vibe than Los Angeles, but in the best way. Whether you're making the move for school, work, or just a change of scenery, here are 10 things I wish I knew before relocating.
1. The cost of living is actually manageable
Everything in LA is expensive—rent, parking, and lunch. In Nashville, things are way more affordable, especially rent. I feel like I have room to breathe here, both financially and physically.
2. Traffic isn't great, but it's not that bad
People in Nashville love to complain about traffic, but let's be real, nothing compares to sitting on the 405 for an hour just to go six miles. Nashville traffic exists, but it's more tolerable, and most places are closer together.
3. You're gonna need a car
Public transit here is... not a thing. There's a bus system, but it's not super reliable or convenient, especially if you're coming from a city like LA, where you can kind of make it work. Having a car makes a huge difference.
4. The weather is unpredictable
This was a big one for me. LA is the same every day. Nashville? One day it's sunny and 75, the next it's freezing or storming. The seasons are real here. Bring a good jacket, rain boots, and layers. All the layers.
5. The music scene is amazing and not just country
Yes, country music is everywhere, but there's also so much more. There's live music every night—pop, indie, rock, even EDM. Smaller venues like The End and The Basement have super cool up-and-coming artists.
6. People are really nice
At first, I thought it was fake, but Southern hospitality is a real thing. People say hi on the street, hold doors, and genuinely want to chat. It's different from LA's keep-your-head-down energy, but it grows on you fast.
7. Brunch is serious business
In LA, brunch is a whole aesthetic. In Nashville, it's more about comfort food and catching up with friends. You've gotta try spots like Biscuit Love or Pancake Pantry, but be ready to wait in line, everyone else had the same idea.
8. Every neighborhood has a personality
This city has so many different areas. East Nashville is quirky and artsy, 12 South is super cute and walkable, and The Gulch is trendy and a little bougie. It's smart to explore before committing to a place to live.
9. Your wardrobe might need a makeover
Coming from LA, I had a closet full of cropped tees and light jackets. That didn't cut it during my first winter here. You'll need warm coats, legit shoes for snow or rain, and breathable clothes for the humid summer. Trust me.
10. Life slows down in a good way
Things just feel less rushed here. People take their time, hang out more, and actually enjoy their day. If LA ever felt exhausting, Nashville feels like a deep breath. You'll notice it right away.
Moving is a big deal, especially across the country, but Nashville makes it worth it. It's different from LA in a lot of ways, but I've grown to love those differences. If you're on the fence, I say go for it.
If you've made the move too, or you're thinking about it, I'd love to hear how it's going for you. What's been the biggest surprise?
